FORT LAUDERDALE (March 5, 2014) – Kelli McDonald, a Broward sheriff’s crime lab chemist in the is the subject of another investigation into missing drugs. As a result, prosecutors are reviewing her cases and asking that evidence she analyzed in pending criminal trials be retested. McDonald’s started to work in the crime lab in 2006, and has tested drugs in more than 5,800 cases.McDonald came under scrutiny when two sets of drug evidence from the summer of 2012 didn’t weigh the same — by about 5 grams and approximately 15 grams. According to the State Attorney’s Office McDonald is a listed witness on 520 open and active drug cases. This isn’t McDonald’s first rodeo. McDonald was the subject of a previous internal affairs investigation in 2012, when she and a colleague reported a .4 gram of crack cocaine was missing from the crime lab. McDonald received verbal counseling after the investigation closed.

“It’s too early to say how the investigation may impact the state attorney’s cases,” Jeff Marcus, chief assistant state attorney, said Tuesday. “The lab is retesting evidence as cases come to trial.”
