The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) have extended a moratorium in South Florida for new home health agencies. This new six month suspension was put into place to fight fraud and secure taxpayer money. Providers in Miami-Dade, Broward, and Monroe counties are no longer eligible to receive reimbursements from Medicare, Medicaid, or Children’s Health Insurance Programs.

Miami, one of the nine Medicare Fraud Strike force regions, is a target for the moratorium due to the great potential for abuse. There has been a tremendous growth in both agency applications and utilization of services. Medicare payments in the Miami area have increased from $90 million in 2006 to $250 million in 2010, making the beneficiary ratio 1,960 percent greater than other counties.

South Florida has seen a great number of high-profile Medicare fraud cases, including that of Healthcare Plus and Naranja Pharmacy. The CMS has recently mentioned plans to require new agencies to submit to background checks before they can receive payments.
